Much has been said about this iconic tool so here's the Short Version:If you don't already have one of these beauties, you should remedy that issue immediately. You will not be sorry.Longer Version:I've carried at least a dozen tools in my pocket over the last 30+ years of living in farmland, several major cities, and suburbs. This tool has seen professional service in a variety of settings, from gun ranges to office parks, and I've used it nearly every day for something in all those contexts... It just performs perfectly every time and fits easily 95% of a reasonable individual's needs in the modern civilized context. While this won't be to the go-to tool for a professional construction worker or soldier, that's never been the idea here... (even then it could still handle a large number of typical day to day tasks in those contexts as well) Its just so packable that it makes sense to have one for redundancy if nothing else... (two is one, and one is none right?) It truly disappears in the pocket and brings simple, high-quality, reliable, dependability to your carry systems. By the way, for years I didn't buy this because I felt I needed a Phillips driver on my EDC tool. The file tool fits most Phillips heads perfectly and in a pinch you can use the can opener tip to drive Phillips heads as well. The steel is Victorinox's soft-but-durable proprietary blend of steel so you likely know what your getting into from past experience. It does take some maintenance to keep shaving sharp, but I just hone it quick with a steel rod every few weeks, and tend to only get out the stones to do a proper sharpening about once a year. That's to maintain the hair-popping, paper-shaving sharpness that I tend to like on my carry tools... You could stand to do a lot less maintenance and retain a serviceable edge for years... Heck, I didn't sharpen my first tinker for years.Summary: I think this is some of the best value you can get for the price across all modern consumer products. Don't hesitate, you're missing out on days, months, years of enjoyment and steadfast service from this most excellent tool. It's easily one of my top 10 favorite tools I've ever owned...Oh yeah, this bad boy was named after the tough men and women that wear a military uniform! It's a simple SAK, with a strong primary blade, cap lifter, can opener, and a badass file (not the chincy nail file found on most SAKs). This file is meant to grind away anything in its way, and it does. The Alox scales give it an upscale look and feel, and the weight is almost perfect. It's 84mm, so slightly smaller than your standard SAK, but considerably larger than the 58mm Classic SD. Many SAK owners and collectors consider the 84mm the perfect size for EDC, and for.good reason. The keyring makes it easy to carry with your keys, so there's no need to drop it into your jeans or suit pocket. My red Cadet Alox is my preferred gentleman's EDC because it's sleek, light, strong, looks damn attractive, and has the tools I need if I'm at a formal event. This is a great SAK, whether you're adding to your collection, or your first SAK. You won't regret spending on a SAK that should probably cost . Buy it for yourself, or a loved one, and you'll be happy you did. I bought 4 more Cadets...one for dad, one for my brother, and one for each of my twin teenage sons (as stocking stuffers). Dad and bro love their Cadet so I feel comfortable recommending this to my friends, family, and complete strangers on Amazon. My reviews are always ???? percent honest and real, so please hit the Helpful button below if you like my review. Thank you! ????????I love the Cadet! Though I have quite a few different knives, this is the one I choose to carry almost every day. For me, the knife is totally adequate for any random daily cutting tasks. I used a dremel tool to grind off the keyring loop because I don't use a lanyard with this tool, and I find that holding the Cadet while using the knife is much more comfortable without that loop pressing into my palm. The knife blade is a pretty soft steel and shows scratches pretty easily, but I don't really mind since this knife is a user, not a piece of art. The softer steel also means that I have to sharpen the blade usually about once a week with regular use, but the soft steel will take a very fine edge. In my mind, this knife can do just about any realistic day to day cutting chore. The super slim profile and light weight make the Cadet easy to carry, ensuring you will have it with you when you need it. It is small enough that I often slip it into the watch pocket of my jeans and forget it is there until I need it.This little number is both elegant and capable. Rarely does something in the range convey a feeling of such admiration by me. The fit and finish is better than other more expensive knives and multitools I own.The toolset is really well thought out. The blade is cheap stamped stailness steel, but it sharpens easily and takes a hair-popping razor edge. I don't much need a can opener, but it handles a #2 phillips very well. Lots of people hate on the nail file, but I've found that it's very effective on #1 phillips screws, and it's a good light-duty awl/prying tool.My only complaint is that the keyring is basically non-removable, and it digs into the hand when doing heavy work with the can-opener/screwdriver tool. Not a fan.I really wish they would make an alox Cadet with scissors. That would be the holy Grail of SAKs. Vixtorinox knows it, but they make more money from people buying multiple models looking for the perfect combination and never finding it.Until then, I'll carry my alox Cadet + alox Classic, or else a Leatherman Style/Squirt. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design. Functionality The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors. Innovation is our Tradition Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs. Iconic Design In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.
