SEYDEL Blues Classic 1847 Harmonica Super Low F Andryani 1 Set of Fork Dust and Oil Seal Kit, Compatible with KT Musical Instruments => Wind Woodwind Instruments => Folk World we are was founded in september 2001 and acquired by the new york times company in october 2010. This is my first harmonica and I'm taking lessons at the Louisville Folk School. In class I've learned to bend holes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. At the end of the class I broke in the reeds on 1, 2, 3, and 4 but still can't bend 6 for long and can't hit the other two bends on 3. Still, I love this harmonica and will stick with it.I chose the Seydel 1847 because it has a maple comb and is a diatonic C harmonica. It had to be Diatonic C because that's what I needed for class and virtually all beginner courses teach first position in key of C.The choice came down to this one or a Suzuki because I definitely wanted to avoid a Hohner Marine Band harmonica and most others had plastic combs. Plastic combs are easy to clean but you only ever hear train whistles on wooden whistles so I felt in my heart of hearts if I only ever own one harmonica it should have a wooden comb.So I watched YouTube videos of the Seydel 1847 and of a Suzuki harmonica. I thought the Suzuki sounded quieter in YouTube videos I watched. I won't know until next time I buy a harmonica. I may want a bag of Fenders in different keys, I may want a chromatic when I get better, I may want a Suzuki in whatever key I find some good oboe chamber music for. Or a Suzuki in the key of the Telemann flute music I have upstairs that I can't play well and need to study without distraction of my terribly leaky flute pads. For now it's a Seydel in C. I have nearly mastered bending the lower half. The reeds resisted me and squeaked at first. It took 4-5 weeks to break the reeds in. They put up a lot of resistence. One of my cats still comes running to turn off the harmonica! Though our dog oddly doesn't care as much about a real harmonica as the one in the sausage commercials on TV. Anyway, I can play really soft and fairly loud. Not as loud as a Hohner Marine Band harmonica maybe. Maybe louder than the Suzuki. Tone quality is great and I can crescendo smoothly from mp to p to f to mf and play chords and talk into it like Laurie Anderson or Regina Spektor. This is a professional instrument and not a toy. I think I had a Hohner Marine Band harmonica as a child but I am not a marine and I like this harmonica much better. The bug has bitten me. I play harmonica now.So disappointed....I really wanted to like these. Beautiful, great covers, the perfect shape and feel for me, and solid build. After many years on many harps, mostly Hohner, Lee Oskar, Suzuki, and one low F Session Steel, my new 1847 classic D is the worst player by far. Airy feeling and difficult to play OOTB. It lacks responsiveness and sensitivity. Like a toy. Similar to the Session, but worse. Gapping and reed alignment didn't help much, nor sanding and sealing the comb. Haven't embossed yet, but tolerances aren't bad, so I'm not holding my breath for improvement there. I suspect the reeds are just too thick and stiff. And not just one or two...across the entire harp. Perhaps not unexpectedly, it seems worse in higher keys. What a shame. So much to like except playability. Maybe I just got a (nother) lemon, but at 90 bucks a pop I won't forgive poor QA...or try again. It's back to Hohner for me. Two stars for prettiness...zero for usefulness.Yes was the right key, the issue was a foul tasting harmonica was sent represented as "new". If there is one thing not to buy used, is a harmonica which retains and holds bacteria. That is unless one soaks it or tries to clean as I suspect happened for the harmonica I ordered. I tried to keep playing it but no matter my wiping it down always tasted foul like some chemical was used on it. I was tempted to throw it away many times but paid 100 bucks and kept it. This is a late review as finally after two years weekend playing the taste diminished. Never happened to me before purchasing from stores so beware who is selling and their reputation and purchase safely if your particular product is ingested or majorly contacts your body in someway. Never buying anything again from Harmonica Land! My first harmonica so I can't properly review it but I can already bend the first hole from D4 to C#4 easily (confirmed with recording software) and I don't even know what I'm doing, so that's good right? The reason I'm giving it 4/5 is that this thing is NOT beard or mustache friendly, at all. In the 15 minutes I've played with it I've snagged my facial hair four times and the pain was excruciating. I'm going to have to shave if I'm going to keep playing this thing.UPDATE: I smeared a tiny amount of silicone into the four gaps causing the problem: where the corners of the top and bottom shells meet the middle sandwich. I let it dry over night and no more beard grabbing!UPDATE: not quite. This thing is still troublesome for the bearded, even with a short beard. It's amazing how the tiniest seams can grab... the top shell is the most problematic, even the front seam which is unbelievably thin yet there are many ripped out hairs jammed in it to prove it's the culprit. All screws are tight so maybe a harder sealant for the front seam like clear finger nail polish. I'll try that next.Nothing about this harp justifies the expense. Why buy these when there are other brands of similar quality for half the money? The Seydel is a product of reasonable quality, but that quality is on a par with Hohner Blues Harps, Lee Oscars, and etc. I am a pro whose been blowing harp since the 60s. Save your money and you can get 2 Lee Oscars for the price of 1 Seydel.
